maría moreno is an Ontario-based Venezuelan-Canadian abstract painter whose work explores movement, colour, and emotion through intuitive, highly expressive compositions. Largely self-taught, she draws on the visual and emotional influence of the Canary Islands, where she was born, and Caracas, Venezuela, where she grew up, bringing a vivid sense of energy and atmosphere to her practice.
Working primarily in acrylic, moreno builds textured abstract paintings through instinctive mark-making, layered colour, and spontaneity, often allowing raw canvas to remain visible as an active element within the work. Influenced by artists such as Secundino Hernández and Cy Twombly, she creates paintings that prioritize feeling over control, inviting viewers into emotional and sensory experiences that feel free, immediate, and deeply human.
Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally, and is held in private and corporate collections across North and South America.
Driven by intuition, my practice explores the expressive potential of colour, movement, and gesture. Each painting begins without a fixed plan, unfolding through a process of experimentation, spontaneity, and discovery.
Layered textures and bold chromatic relationships create spaces where emotion and memory can surface. The unexpected is an essential part of the work, revealing moments of authenticity that cannot be planned.
Rooted in abstraction, my paintings seek to communicate what often lies beyond language, inviting viewers into a space of feeling, reflection, and personal interpretation.
"Art is not always about pretty things. It's about who we are, what happened to us and how our lives are affected."
